The Department of Biomedical Informatics within the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (http://www.uams.edu/) is committed to the academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and seeks an instructor with a solid track record in Imaging Informatics.

UAMS Medical Center is the only academic medical center and tertiary care center in the state of Arkansas. We deliver patient care from 400 licensed beds, a 24-hour emergency room, outpatient clinics and an outpatient center from which we offer outpatient surgery. Our association with regional primary care practices throughout the state offers many opportunities in rural medicine and underserved populations. We have a high level of clinical expertise, existing and growing programs of research in a wide variety of medical specialties.

The Department of Biomedical Informatics was founded in 2015 and has grown to twenty-four primary faculty. Our graduate program in Biomedical Informatics was approved by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education in 2017 and enrolled our first class in the fall of 2017. We are located with the medical center on the campus of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), the state’s only institution of professional and graduate education devoted solely to health with Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, Nursing and Health Professions as well as a Graduate School focusing on basic Biomedical Sciences. Programs in these areas currently have over 1800 enrolled students.

The Department of Biomedical Informatics created, operates and maintains the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA).  This open access information repository provides radiology and pathology images, clinical data and associated non-image information to thousands of cancer researchers around the world.  Each month over 9000 users visit the site and download over 60TB of research data.  This resource provides a powerful platform for advanced imaging informatics research and a training opportunity for students.  The primary duties of this position involve acquisition and quality control for new TCIA data collections. Extension of the capability of TCIA as a cutting edge research product itself, through integration of new and complex imaging modalities with more exotic non-image metadata, will be a secondary aim of this position.  The successful candidate will manage a small team of staff members.

Candidates must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare, computer science, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience with radiological imaging or imaging research including DICOM
  • A working knowledge of databases
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience

Candidate with expertise in one or more of the following areas are desired:

  • Extensive knowledge of the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard
  • Programming/scripting ability in one or more scripting languages,
  • Ability to create, modify, or implement workflows and operating procedures
  • Experience with imaging based clinical trials
  • Communication and social interaction skills
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and other institutional policies regarding protected or personally identifying health information.
  • Ability to problem-solve in a team setting and while assisting external clients

This position will involve extended periods at a computer, excellent visual attention to detail, and frequent telephone/conference call/web conferences.

Appointment will be at the instructor level dependent on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and based on the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences pay scales.
